facebook - yet another social network
Up to the moment that I started using facebook, I had a really good opinion about it. After all, it’s used by the important people, unlike other social networks like hi5 and yahoo 360. When you hear about CEOs and successful entrepreneurs crawling a social networking site, well, that actually says something about the quality of the network, or does it? I mean, it would come only natural that the more serious people having serious backgrounds and serious leisure activities would make their own network, wouldn’t it?
Nevermind all the questions, here are some answers:
- I am a serious person. My leisure activities can be considered work for others. I like creating stuff that stands for at least one brilliant idea.
- I made myself a facebook account with the idea of networking. High-class networking, ofc. I tried to fill in as much “serious” info I could about me. Really, I don’t mind people asking me to be their friends because we like the same movies, books, music or arts in general. All these actually say something about both our characters and intellectual means of communicating with one-another
- what I got instead was quite an impressive number of friend requests from Arabian and Romanian men (once again, these peoples have lots of bright, intelligent individuals, no discrimination there), who don’t know me and who have no ”serious” information on their profile. Furthermore, the no. of shallow applications and photos and animations lying on their profile makes me wonder what the heck did they find in common with me?
- so normally, I would say “ok, let’s be friends” on social networking sites like hi5, because, being a writer and a creative person, my job, among others, is to educate. So if I can make a shallow guy read just one blog post and learn about something intelligent, I’m fulfilling part of my job and I’m successful at it. BUT… I don’t see the point in having two “hi5″ accounts.
- furthermore, people I kinda think are intelligent started to ask me to join whatever games facebook introduced. all those shiny applications that really say “solitaire” and “minesweeper”. You don’t have to be a genius to realize there are games far more entertaining for grown-ups that you can play: debates for example; flirting while denying you’re doing it or actually collaborating for a project not-in-your-line-of-work. You don’t have to be a genius either to know that the games facebook introduced are for displaying ads among them; it’s in the news. Even World of Warcraft is a better choice at playing games for grown-ups because you actually get to play complicated scenarios similar to life, if not even the same.(btw, hopefully Blizzard won’t introduce in-game ads)
bottom-line: I am heavily disappointed in facebook. It behaves like hi5 but it doesn’t even have all the hi5 functionality included.

and… Facebook finally realized its problem. Since I’m not the only one who thinks the same. Read the article on BBC News:

I think it is the first comment I have ever wrote to a blog post :). I`ve joined facebook community a short time ago too, and I was dissapointed for the exact reasons you wrote. However, I think it is important to pass over the arabians and romanians men that are looking for a girl to flirt with, cause it is in their nature to do that, and reject those friend requests. In this way, you have your small group of friends that you cand share photos, ideas with. About the silly games, just ignore them. They`re like adds. No one clicks on it. Facebook have to make some money too.
So , just be selective, and you might find great people on facebook that you wouldn`t find in a million years on hi5.
Love your posts :).
